Okigbo wrote for only 10 years before he died at the age of thirty-five fighting for the independence of Biafra, but it was enough to establish him as a major poet and modernist writer. The majority of the poems here were previously published in slightly different forms in Transition magazine and in three collections published by Mbari Publications, Heavensgate (1962), Limits (1964) and Silences (1965). Okigbo considered these versions as final and the poems as organically related. Also included in this collection is Path of Thunder, which was left unfinished at the author's death.
