In The Sea in the Metro, Jayne Tuttle explores in extreme detail the story of a new mother in Paris trying to cling to an autonomous, creative self while balancing the gendered demands of parenthood. Meanwhile, in Vocal Break, Lauren Elkin seamlessly blends memoir, feminist manifesto and cultural history to explore a plurality of female singing voices – and how women have used them to defy convention, genre, capitalism, racism and sexism. From Beyoncé to Broadway, Vocal Break is a joyous call to arms.
Both former actors and performers, Jayne and Lauren will discuss the use of memoir and narrative to explore power and identity, nakedness and self-exposure, exhibitionism and vulnerability, failure and freedom, and how to live full-throatedly in a male-dominated world.
Girls to the front: NOW.
